Positioning

In Faenora, where you stand matters almost as much as what you swing.
Positioning decides who strikes first, who survives and who quickly becomes a delicious monster hors d'oeuvre. It influences how your units act, who they can target and how your squad interacts as a whole. Mastering positioning means controlling the flow of battle or at least keeping an eye on arrows barreling towards your face.
Why Positioning Matters
Positioning affects nearly every aspect of combat:
1. Battle Actions
Your unit’s row determines how many Battle Actions they can take each round. We literally just had a whole section on this - read that if you want to live.
2. Targeting Logic
Who you can hit (and who can hit you) depends entirely on your position:
Melee units can only target the frontmost enemy in a column.
Ranged units can only target the rearmost enemy in a column.
Enemies follow the same rules. If your squishy healer is lounging in the front row, don’t expect them to stay un-squished for long.
3. Area-of-Effect (AOE) Skills
Positioning also affects how AOE skills like Heal+ or Fell Blade perform. When your cleric uses Heal+ on row full of Hunters in need of some sweet, sweet recovery, few things in life are more satisfying. If you use Heal+ on a row with a single unit, a shiver of shame runs down your spine. Speak to a friend, don't deal with that guilt alone.
The same applies to offensive AOE skills, like Fell Blade or Shadowfist. The denser the enemy formation, the more effective your damage.
“If everyone’s standing close together, you’re either a tactical genius or about to become a very convenient pile of ash.” – Anonymous Tactician
Changing Position
During Battle
Use the Move command to shift your unit’s position between rows. Strategic repositioning can save a unit from certain doom...or just buy time until your healer finishes screaming.
Outside of Battle
In the Squad Formation screen, you can drag and drop characters to rearrange your formation before a Hunt begins. It’s your best chance to optimize placement before stepping into the Wildlands. Once the monsters show up, they tend to rearrange things for you.
Positioning in Progress
Some advanced skills - not yet discovered - may one day move units during battle, either as a tactical maneuver or as a result of a mighty blow. When that time comes, position mastery will become even more critical.
For now, remember:
Front row: brave (or reckless)
Middle row: balanced (potentially untargetable if the meat in a sandwich)
Back row: wise (or cowardly, depending on who’s asking)
“I once saw a Knight in the back row. Didn’t move. Didn’t fight. I think I heard him eating a snack under his helmet. Survived the whole battle. The man’s a genius. Terrible squadmate though.” – Moochkin
