chessCharacter Types

Not all adventurers are cut from the same cloth. From disposable recruits to legendary NFT characters (Hunters), every type brings its own role, limitations and colorful way to meet a dramatic end in the Wildlands.

Heroes

Unique, one-of-a-kind characters that stand above all others. Heroes are event-based or special presale units (like Tendybear) with exclusive abilities, innate skills, and lore baked into their design. They’re the rarest and most coveted type, always limited in supply. When a Hero joins your squad, expect them to change the shape of the battlefield (and the leaderboard).

Mercenaries

The backbone of the Hunters system. Mercenaries are NFT characters you can mint, trade, and permanently progress. Each comes with their own rarity and innate skill, along with a customizable appearance and ability to change classes. Unlike recruits, Mercenaries persist between Hunt cycles, allowing you to invest in their development, stock them with your best Retractkin-attached gear and watch them evolve into legends (or at least into slightly less accident-prone adventurers).

Villagers

Every kingdom needs its unsung heroes. Villagers are lower cost NFT characters. They carry the spirit of the people of Faenora in a homely fashion, where their hunt seems more for food than glory. Villagers cannot always match Mercenaries in raw stats or battle skills, but their grit and determination make them a great choice for select roles. Fragile in battle and even more afraid of permadeath than you are, they are best placed in a protected slot in your squad or assisting the Financier with sponsored work (for passive rewards).

Recruits

The “free-to-play” adventurers who answer the call of Donegal with little more than a borrowed sword and questionable life choices. Recruits are temporary: they exist for a single Hunt cycle and vanish afterward, regardless of outcome. They can level up, change classes at the Dojo and even shine in the right squad - but once the Hunt ends, so do they. Perfect for filling out a roster, experimenting with classes or learning the ropes before buying permanent characters.

circle-info

You earn Nethertalons (leaderboard points) after each Netherbeast battle based on the surviving permanent characters in your squad:

  • HeroesNethertalon value variable based on Hero (Alistair / Tendybear - 4x Base)

  • Mercenaries 4x Base Nethertalon value

  • VillagersBase Nethertalon value

  • RecruitsNo Nethertalons

Only Hunters that persist beyond a single run (Heroes, Mercenaries, Villagers) contribute to your score. Recruits may fight bravely, but they don’t move the leaderboard.
